Lately, I’ve had to travel quite a bit for work—insurance conferences—and the greater part of the panels taking place during the conferences are of no interest to me (taxes and actuaries, ugh). Surprisingly, I find that these are great times for me to write. I have to be there and I only have to pay a modicum of attention. So it is a perfect opportunity to let my creative self be free. Though, caveat, I am a multi-tasker and find my creative mind works better when my literal mind is occupied. (I can get so much work done on the article writing and assignments when I’m in a database meeting!)
In these meetings, I can’t really work on novels, they’re too involved, but short stories and poems are perfect. In the past I’ve always written long hand on hotel paper, but, as a “journalist,” I can get away with having a laptop and can “take notes.”
