One of the samples given to us to read were the first 50 pages of Charles Lavalle's "The Changeling." I loved the seamless way that the author moves from one voice to another, so I went to my local indie bookstore and bought a copy right away. The whole book was an adventure. I never would have picked it up if I hadn't been introduced to it this way.
I joined a MOOC (massive open online course) through the University of Iowa's International Writer's Program. It is turning out to be a wonderful experience. For each segment of the course, we get samples to read, scholarly video talks about writing, a chance to try our hand at a 1500 word story, and we get to have it critiqued while critiquing the sample from other participants.
