Photo Albums

2/28/2012

For several years soon after college I was a photo editor for an encyclopedia publisher. I tend to be an organized person, but that job made me very particular about my photos. Since 1997, I have created a photo album for the year, every year. It's always my January project (although this year I am very behind) and one of my favorite things to do. Especially now, since its so easy to get books printed.

When I was trying to think of additional materials to add to the Moving Pictures website, I came up with the idea of making a photo album for Magda's life. I love looking through photos, especially old ones, and there are several vendors at the Pasadena City College swap meet that have tables of them. I've had so much fun picking through photos and finding ones that might become a part of Magda's life. Although, writing captions for them has not been very easy.

I think the photo albums add a touch of whimsy and perspective to Magda's "fictional memoir." From the feedback I've gotten already, it seems to be a hit.

Epublishing, Going My Own Way

After much research, I've decided that I will publish and distribute Moving Pictures on my own. Its only a little more work, and a lot less money. As I have already created my book cover and I've got the know-how to set-up the book as a book in different formats, it only makes sense to do it myself.

The downside is that I have to be my own IT person and accountant. Two things I'd rather not be. At least my book will be out in the "wild." That is what is really important here.

The Closer It Gets, the More Things To Do

I'm hoping to make Moving Pictures available online within the next month, but it seems like my "To Do" list is only growing. I've got the websites mostly developed and am still waiting for the manuscript to come back from my proofreader. But now that I'm getting closer to launching, I have all these little things to do . . . collect email addresses, develop a facebook page, etc. Right now it's seeming rather endless.

Agent free

One of the main reasons I've decided to go solo on this publishing project is that I couldn't face another round of agent rejection. I know there are a lot of writers who have been through way more rejection than I have, and I commend them for it, but I just don't have the time to waste on trying to find an agent to take an interest in me.

The last rejection I got came from an agent I had met at a conference and who had shown a great deal of interest in my book. Her rejection note had this line in it: "I've had a chance to read the excerpt you provided, and while there were interesting aspects to it, I'm sorry to say that wasn't drawn into the story in the way I had hoped to be."

Not the worst thing that has been said about my book and I'm sure it was meant in a very friendly way. However, I can't help but see it as a back-handed criticism--she liked the concept well enough, but was disappointed with my execution.

And even if she meant no harm, as I'm fairly certain that she did not, I can't help reading more into, not when my heart's work is so involved.

Scary Process

Since I got this process started about five weeks ago--the process of getting my book published and setting up my websites--I haven't a twinge of anxiety. Its the right thing to do right now. Yet this past week, I've really started to question what it is I'm doing. Questioning myself in a way that is not "Are these the right steps to be taking," and more like "How ridiculous am I being for undertaking this?"

However, the ball is rolling and at this point it would be silly of me to stop it. I've already committed a lot of time, effort, and money. There is not that much left to do except to do it.
